What this prompt is really asking

• Responsibility

  Knowledge and Society · primary lens

  The prompt asks whether an obligation can attach to enquiry itself, before any knowledge exists to be misused.

  What a knower owes as a result of knowing, or of being in a position to know. It covers obligations in producing knowledge, in passing it on accurately, and in acting or refusing to act on it, including the responsibility taken on by choosing not to look.

• Values

  Knowledge and Society

  Deciding that some question should not be asked ranks a value above knowing, which is exactly the trade-off the prompt exposes.

  What a knower or a community takes to be worth pursuing, protecting or preferring. Values operate inside knowledge production and not just around it: they select the problems, set the acceptable risk of error, and decide which trade-offs count as costs.

Scope

Responsibility: Disciplines disagree about where their responsibility ends. Whether a field's remit stops at producing findings or extends to their application is a scope question with direct ethical consequences.

Perspectives

Values: What a community values determines which problems look important, so the value commitments of a discipline and the range of perspectives inside it reinforce one another over time.

Ethics

Responsibility: This element asks what practitioners owe: integrity in producing knowledge, honesty about uncertainty when communicating it, and a decision about what to do once something is known that cannot be unknown.

Values: Values are not applied to finished knowledge from outside. They are already in the choice of question, the acceptable rate of false positives, and the decision about which harms count as costs, which is why value-free enquiry is not an available option.
