What the Chipko villagers knew

From India·An enduring case

In the 1970s, Himalayan villagers, many of them women, embraced trees to stop commercial felling, arguing the forests' real yield was soil, water and air rather than timber. Ecological science later formalised much of what the protest already asserted. The knowledge arrived before the credentials did.
