Maryam Mirzakhani, Iranian-born and educated through Tehran's olympiad system, became in 2014 the first woman awarded mathematics' highest honour, in a discipline whose prize lists had run male for eight decades. The theorems are indifferent to their prover. The pipeline that decides who gets to prove them is not.
