Simplifying the characters

From East Asia·An enduring case

Mainland China's simplified characters raised literacy while severing visual links to older texts that Taiwan and Hong Kong retain, so the same classical passage now looks foreign to some Chinese readers and familiar to others. A reform of strokes became a fork in cultural memory.
