Inheriting an actor's name

In kabuki, actors inherit stage names through lineages stretching back centuries, and taking the name signals that the performance knowledge of that line now lives in this body. The name is a claim about continuity of craft. Whether the knowledge really is continuous, or whether the name creates the appearance of continuity, is not decidable from outside.
