Painting by prescribed proportion

From South Asia·An enduring case

Tibetan thangka painters work to iconometric grids specifying proportions for each figure, deviation from which makes the image religiously ineffective rather than merely ugly. Correctness here is measurable and doctrinal. The painter's skill lies in what remains free once the rules are satisfied, which is not where a Romantic account of art would look for it.
