Who influenced whom

From East Asia·An enduring case

Japanese woodblock prints reshaped late nineteenth-century European painting, and the story is usually told as European artists discovering Japan. Told from the other side it is a story about Japanese printmakers whose compositional innovations were absorbed and renamed. The same evidence supports both narrations, and which one appears in textbooks is not decided by the evidence.
