Reading Ashoka after two thousand years

From India·An enduring case

When James Prinsep deciphered the Brahmi script in the 1830s, rock inscriptions across the subcontinent suddenly spoke, and Ashoka re-entered history after centuries of oblivion. The recovery happened inside a colonial scholarly apparatus, which shaped what was asked of the evidence and who got to answer.

The concepts this raises

Each of these gives a class a different way into the same case.

PowerKnowledge and Society
The capacity to shape what counts as knowledge, who is heard, and what gets funded, published or taught. Power is not only censorship; setting an agenda, controlling a platform or being granted authority all change the knowledge that a community ends up with.
InterpretationThe Knower's Lens
The work of making something mean something. Data, texts, images and events do not announce their own significance; the categories a knower brings determine what is even available to be noticed, which is why disagreements about interpretation are rarely settled by looking harder.

Where it sits in the knowledge framework

Perspectives
Whose viewpoints have shaped this knowledge, which viewpoints have been absent, and how the discipline handles internal disagreement. This element includes the historical dimension: how the standpoint of a field has moved over time.
Methods and tools
The practices, conventions, instruments and forms of reasoning through which knowledge here is actually made, together with the assumptions those methods build in and what they are structurally unable to detect.

Areas of knowledge

Cases that raise a concept this one raises, but in a different area of knowledge or a different part of the world. That contrast is the point: it is what shows a student the concept travels.
