The Knower's Lens
Interpretation
The work of making something mean something. Data, texts, images and events do not announce their own significance; the categories a knower brings determine what is even available to be noticed, which is why disagreements about interpretation are rarely settled by looking harder.
How the knower shapes knowledge. These concepts ask what the knower contributes to what is known, and why two careful people looking at the same thing can arrive somewhere different.
IA prompts this concept is central to
The wording is the guide’s, exactly. Quote it as it stands.
- IA prompt 06How does the way that we organize or classify knowledge affect what we know?Classification is interpretation made durable. Once a category exists it decides what counts as the same kind of thing, before any enquiry begins.
- IA prompt 09Are some types of knowledge less open to interpretation than others? The prompt invites a ranking of disciplines by interpretive openness, and the interesting work is in showing that even proof and measurement require interpretation.
Prompts where it is a useful second angle
- IA prompt 20What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?Experience does not arrive labelled. What a knower takes an experience to show is already an interpretation of it.
- IA prompt 24How might the context in which knowledge is presented influence whether it is accepted or rejected?Framing changes what the same statement is taken to mean, which is interpretation operating at the point of reception.
- IA prompt 30What role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world?Imagining what else the data could mean is the mechanism by which an interpretation gets a rival to be tested against.
- IA prompt 33How is current knowledge shaped by its historical development?Historical development leaves categories behind, and later knowers interpret new findings through categories built for older problems.
Interpretation under the knowledge framework
Only the elements where this concept has something substantive to say. An empty pairing is left dimmed rather than padded.
Interpretation is where perspective does its work. Two historians with the same archive, or two economists with the same dataset, can disagree without either misreading anything, because they bring different accounts of what the material is evidence of.
Disciplines build methods specifically to constrain interpretation without eliminating it: hermeneutic conventions, coding schemes, statistical procedure. Studying those constraints shows what a field regards as an interpretation gone wrong.
