The orchestra with no score

Javanese gamelan is learned by sitting in the ensemble and absorbing it, with written notation used as a reminder rather than a source. A player knows their part in relation to everyone else's, which is knowledge that only exists while the group plays. Transcribing gamelan produces a document that could not teach anyone to play it.
