From Latin America and the Caribbean·An enduring case

Inca administration ran on quipus, cords whose knots encoded census and tribute data and possibly narrative, and Spanish authorities destroyed many precisely because they were records. Scholars can read the arithmetic of surviving quipus but not their stories. The storage survived; the decoding community did not.
